This scene of a reef in St. Kitts is typical of the Caribbean reefs. Many species of corals including the Scratchy Sea Whip (Muricea muricata),Green Sea Fans (Gorgonia flabellum),Brain Coral (Diploria strigosa), varieties of Sponges, including the Brown Volcano Sponge (Hemectyon sp.) and some encrusting sponges, are visible.
The Caribbean is home to about 70 species of Corals, while the South Pacific counts over 700 as indigenous. These reefs are also home to a variety of fish life including many species of Parrotfish of which the Three-color Parrotfish (Scarus tricolor) is the most common.
