Mandarinfish (Synchiropus splendidus)
[0983]
Gallery quality underwater photographic print by Paul Waldeck, available framed or unframed in several sizes.

The Mandarinfish is one of the most elusive and most beautiful fish on the coral reef. Living beneath stands of hard coral, Mandarinfish rise above the coral to mate only at dusk for a few seconds and then dart back to the safety of their coral protection.

This picture was the result of lying on the bottom for almost one hour until the Mandarinfish emerged to find a mate. It was so brief that a second shot was not possible. Usually the female will rise with the male into the water column, release its eggs which, in an instant, will be fertilized by the male, and both then disappear.

Photographed in the Solomon Islands
