Bluestriped Fangblenny (Plagiotremus rhinorhynchos)
[3182]
Gallery quality underwater photographic print by Paul Waldeck, available framed or unframed in several sizes.

This unusual Blenny was hiding in a hole in the hard coral at Gavutu Island in the Solomons. This is an old WW II US seaplane base which is near Tulagi, the traditional capitol of the Solomon Islands.

The "smile" intrigued me, as did the the Goby's beautiful colors.Often called Sabertoothed Blennies, they have two large curved canine teeth in front of their lower jaws.

Most Blennies feed on tiny crustaceans, including shrimps, worms, sponges and mollusks. This species however, uses its canine teeth to bite flesh from the fins of other fish for food.

Photographed in the Solomon Islands
