This close-up of the extended polyps of a hard coral colony,show clearly how the coral feeds.

The coral senses when the current flow increases and extends its polyps to feed on the phytoplankton which the current brings.

When the current is slack, there are fewer nutrients in the water column and the polyps withdraw.
