Ribbon Eel (Rhinomuraena quaesita)
Gallery quality underwater photographic print by Paul Waldeck, available framed or unframed in several sizes.

Ribbon Eels live on coral reefs, usually hiding in crevices. Unlike most other eels, Ribbon Eels change color and sex during their lives. Juveniles are almost all black with a yellow dorsal fin. As they mature, the black becomes a bright blue and the lower jaw and nose become yellow. When the Ribbon eel reaches a length of about 4 feet the blue male turns yellow and becomes a fully functional female.

The leaf-like nostril flaps are used to sense vibrations in the water and approaching danger.

Because they are so shy, Ribbon Eels are rarely encountered in the undersea realm.

Photographed in Indonesia
